Verizon Wireless Opens Network

Verizon Wireless announced today that it would be opening up its network to allow access to devices other than those Verizon Wireless sells.  Regardless of the motives of Verizon’s decisions if Verizon embraces this new policy with completely open arms, it could mean great success for not only Verizon but the industry as a whole.

Verizon Wireless’ announcement comes on the heels of Google announcing the Open Handset Alliance, also known as Android, who’s goal is to create an open source platform for developing mobile technology.

These announcements mean big changes in the mobile voice and mobile web sectors.  There will be greater access to mobile technology by all consumers.  If the mobile carriers can find ways to reduce the costs of obtaining a compatible web accessible phone, as well as reduce the costs of data access they will find that mobile web access will grow tremendously.  The costs of access are currently too great for most consumers.

The trend is headed to mobile web access as evidenced by the iPhone as well as many other new mobile handsets which place greater emphasis on data access than most other features.

Success is not the key to happiness; happiness is the key to success.
