Google and Android are not open, get over it.

Another day, another article about Google’s lack of openness. This morning Endgadget reported the following:

A storm seems to be brewing over the realm of Android development. Bloomberg’s Businessweek spies have received word from “a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem” that Google is actively working to gain control and final say over customizations of its popular mobile OS.

This should not come as a surprise to anybody. Google is a business and they aren’t going to be the champion to open source software that everyone seems to expect them to be (or that they claim to be). There is a long-term business model in this that will pay off for Google’s shareholders at some point. In fact, it would be failure of fiduciary duty if Google invested this level of resources without pay-off for shareholders.

Google is making a bold move towards a better, more unified, user experience on the Android platform. In order for Android to truly cross the chasm to become a leader in the mobile platform market, they have to reduce this fragmentation and present a single unified user experience. There is a very fine line between openness and mass consumer market appeal and if anybody can walk that line, it’s Google.

So get over it and accept that Google will never be truly open, they’ll only be more open than their competitors.

Seriously? The GOP’s only goal in the next 2 years is to make sure Obama fails? Don’t they realize that if Obama fails, we all fail?

It is clear that the GOP intends to do NOTHING over the next 2 years to actually help the American people. This isn’t a zero sum game people. A Presidential failure will only mean we will have at least 2 more years of high unemployment and a terrible economy.

President Obama, please use your executive powers and stop trying to be a noble leader. Make some serious progress with or without the GOP and I assure you, your supporters will be faithful in 2012.

Stop Kidding Yourself...

Both political parties need to stop kidding themselves. I have only skimmed the headlines of this morning’s news and know that both parties have got it all wrong.

At least they agree on one thing, they both believe the American people actually care.

Both parties are delusional in thinking that the American people actually care about the process, about the politics, about the party. Breaking news: We. Don’t. Care.

What we do care about (and how we will judge your time in office) is by the end results of the key issues we care about. What we care about is the end result, not all the shenanigans that goes on to get there.

We want lower unemployment. So do what needs to get done to lower unemployment. Surely there is a right answer and compromise to get there, so stop talking about it and find it.

Dear President Obama,

I was a supporter of your campaign in 2008 and defended some of your ideas vehemently to friends and family. I often annoyingly hit “reply-all” to inaccurate emails that are forwarded to me that claim all things from the fact that you are Muslim to the fact that you are a socialist.

I was, and still am, happy to cry foul when people present their opinions as fact. I still believe that your vision aligns with mine; however, I need you to know a few things as we roll swiftly into the second half of your presidency:

Let’s actually see the “change you believe in” in action and stop playing party politics. This is just a major distraction that we don’t care about.
Democrats should loose control of the Senate and/or House of Representatives tomorrow. This will force bipartisanship and new ideas.
I support you, not the Democratic party. So please stop spamming me with your endorsements. You should also stop sharing my email address with the Democratic party. I am not afraid to mark your (and every other Democrat’s) email as spam.

Have a leader with this type of vision. As much as people like to argue about how wrong Apple’s “closed” platform is; you sure can’t argue $4 billion in profits with a 70% increase year over year.

Android certainly has a position in this market, but I agree with Steve Jobs that the Android market is completely fragmented. Don’t believe it? Just take a look at RIM and their app marketplace(s). They are a completely terrible user experience.

It amazes me that Eric Shmidt actually thinks that multiple app markets is a “Net win for everybody” when in reality this is a “Net win for nobody.”

5 Competitive Market Research Tips to Help You Stay Ahead of the Competition

Market Research is Key
Earlier this year I spent 2 days at OpenView Venture Partners Market Segmentation Forum where Luke Hohmann discussed a very specific process towards excellent market segmentation. Since the event I have been working on a detailed market segmentation project which has included a substantial amount of competitive market research.

Many small businesses avoid this type of market research because they don’t know where to start, but I’m here to tell you that you can (and should) do it. If you don’t know where to start, you are in the perfect position to begin. All I can tell you is that you should dive right in because once you do, you’ll be glad you did. To help you get started, I have assembled 5 tips from my work over the past 2 months.

Have a Goal
Before you begin your research, define one or more goals. Your goals will define the path you take with your market research. Beginning competitive market research without a goal will waste your time
Have a Hypothesis
You’ll likely already have some ideas as to the nature of the market you are researching- this is your hypothesis. Your market research should attempt to confirm or nullify this hypothesis. When you nullify your hypothesis, form a new one and continue. I guarantee this will happen at least once during your research.
Be Open Minded
Let your research guide you, not the other way around. Be open minded and learn about the market. Instead of trying to confirm your hypothesis, you should try to nullify your hypothesis. If all you do is confirm your original hypothesis, you haven’t learned anything new about your market (which may be acceptable in some cases).
Use Measurable Data
Your research should be based on measurable data points instead of anecdotal notes and opinions. You must approach competitive market research from an analytical perspective. You want to learn about key competitors, relative market share, product price points, etc. If all you have is opinionated statements, you haven’t gone far enough in your research.
Document Your Results
A very important part of conducting market research is to document your findings. I, of course, used a Central Desktop workspace to organize and document my research from the very beginning. I have many wiki pages and online spreadsheets that I have used throughout the process.
A question I kept asking myself when I began this project is “How do I know when I am done?” and after beginning my research, I have learned that market research is never “done.” You may have a hypothesis that you can’t nullify, but that could all change with a new market competitor next week.

One of the most awesome things about conducting this type of market research is the feeling that all your research has led you to a hypothesis that you can’t nullify. The process has been very rewarding and nothing like I would have ever expected. If you have ever done formal market research or segmentation, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

The Skype and Verizon Announcement Won't Change Anything

Skype and Verizon chose their words VERY carefully today when they announced their partnership to allow Skype on select Verizon Wireless phones. Those carefully chosen words means that this announcement merely maintains the status quo in the mobile markets. Nothing innovative, revolutionary, or otherwise game changing as the notorious bloggers would have you believe.
Here’s a quote from the official press release

The two companies have created an exclusive, easy-to-use Skype mobile offering for 3G smartphones. Verizon Wireless 3G smartphone users with data plans can use Skype mobile to:

make and receive unlimited Skype-to-Skype voice calls to any Skype user around the globe on America’s most reliable wireless network;
call international phone numbers at competitive Skype Out calling rates;

send and receive instant messages to other Skype users; and
remain always connected with the ability to see friends’ online presence.

Points 1, 3, and 4 aren’t new features at all and it seems embarrassing to even try to include them in this announcement. I can already accomplish those same exact things with Yahoo and/or AIM.

Point 2 is the only line in the whole announcement that actually reads as a potential game changer, until the second word. What’s that? ”call international phone numbers at competitive Skype Out calling rates” Obviously this was carefully worded to exclude all domestic calls. There’s no way that Verizon would sacrifice any dime of short-term revenue to actually make a major game changing announcement.

If Verizon was at all interested in changing the rules of the game in the mobile market, they would have announced a decoupling of voice and data plans for select devices. They should have arranged a revenue share with Skype along with a higher priced data-only plan for the ability to use a VoIP provider for placing ALL calls.

I guess my expectations of real innovation are far too high.
